During the early months of a puppy’s life, exposure to a variety of sights, sounds, smells, and experiences is essential. This is where puppy classes play a vital role by providing a safe and supervised environment for puppies to interact with other dogs and learn proper social behaviours. These classes also expose puppies to different people, ranging from various shapes and sizes to those using aids like hats, skateboards, and wheelchairs, as well as children and babies.

This early exposure helps puppies grow into well-rounded adult dogs who are comfortable in diverse environments, ensuring they remain calm and friendly in the presence of strangers and other animals, while also preventing common behaviour issues such as jumping on people.

Importance of Adult Training

A well-adjusted adult dog should be able to greet people, dogs, and different environments without fear. However, achieving this level of comfort and confidence may take months or even years. To facilitate the process, engaging in adult training is crucial. This includes exposing the dog to various locations and working on engagement drills.

Without proper socialization during this critical period, dogs may develop behavioural problems later in life, which unfortunately remain the leading reason for pets being relinquished to animal shelters.

Behaviour Modification

Unlike obedience training, it is a more intricate process aimed at making the dog comfortable and confident in different scenarios. Skilled trainers employ second-order reinforcers like hand signals, clickers, and verbal praise to encourage positive behaviour, while aversives are used to discourage unwanted behaviours. However, studies have shown that punishment-based training methods can increase fear and aggression in dogs.

The key lies in associating positive consequences with various stimuli through classical conditioning, which takes time and patience.

The Role of Socialization

A dog’s early experiences with people, animals, and environments significantly shape its future behaviour. Proper socialization at a young age is crucial to ensure dogs grow up well-adjusted and confident. Similar to how children learn from observing and interacting with their family members, dogs also need to be taught proper interaction through training. This forms a solid foundation for learning advanced obedience commands.

Without adequate socialization, dogs can develop fear and anxiety towards new people and situations, leading to behavioural issues like barking at cyclists, nervousness during vet visits, or aggression towards other dogs on walks. However, even adult dogs can benefit from training and socialization to overcome previous socialization hurdles.
